Two Journalists Arrested in Sulaymaniah

Introduction

In the framework of ongoing violations against the freedom of journalistic work in the Kurdistan Region, today, June 3, 2026, security forces in the city of Sulaymaniah arrested the “Paytext” media team while they were performing their professional duties.

Context and Details of the Incident

During a protest held by residents of two neighborhoods in Sulaymaniah against a municipality decision to demolish their homes, the media team from the “Paytext” institution was present on-site to convey the voices of the citizens.

During the coverage, Sulaymaniah Asayish (security) forces intervened and arrested both journalists, who are identified as:

• Peshkewt Khalil — Paytext Reporter

• Bakhtiar Rabati — Paytext Cameraman

The arrest of this team comes at a time when, according to Law No. 3 of 2008 (The Press Law in Kurdistan), no journalist may be detained or arrested for their intellectual and professional work without a judicial warrant.

Commenting on the matter, Gova Ahmed, Head of the Kurdish Cultural Organization in the UK, stated:

“The arrest of a journalist during their professional duty puts a question mark over the authority of that region.”

In light of the continuous violations committed against journalists and freedom of expression in the region, the Kurdish Cultural Organization, within the framework of its agenda and responsibilities, has developed a multi-dimensional plan to draw international attention—specifically from the United Kingdom—to the dangers facing journalistic work.

Key Pillars of the Plan

1. Meeting with Chatham House

• There are serious intentions and plans to hold a meeting with UK officials, specifically with the renowned institution Chatham House, which is a major and influential center for research and monitoring international events.

• The objective of this meeting is to deliver all official reports and documentation regarding the current situation of journalists.

2. Communication with the UK Parliament

• The next step will involve organizing high-level meetings with members and officials of the UK Parliament to discuss the unfavorable situation and request closer monitoring on their part.

3. Activating Diplomatic Channels

• Leveraging the presence of foreign consulates and embassies in the region, the organization emphasizes utilizing these channels to exert pressure and deliver their messages.

Ultimate Goal and Conferences

In the future, the Kurdish Cultural Organization will work toward organizing conferences and general meetings aimed at:

• Immediately halting the process of arresting, accusing, killing, and assassinating journalists.

• Preserving the message of the tens and hundreds of journalists who have sacrificed their lives and become martyrs for the freedom of the country.

  گۆڤە ئەحمەد، سەرۆکی ڕێکخراوی رۆشنبیرانی کورد لە بەریتانیا، لەو بارەیەوە دەڵێت: دەستگیرکردنی رۆژنامەنووس لەکاتی ئەرکە پیشەیەکەیدا نیشانی پرسیارە لەسەر دەسەڵاتی ئەو ناوچەیە و بەو بۆنەیەوە و

  سەرباری ئەو پێشێلکارییە بەردەوامانەی کە بەرامبەر بە ڕۆژنامەنووسان و ئازادیی ڕادەربڕین لە ناوچەکەدا دەکرێن، ڕێکخراوی ڕۆشنبیریی کورد لە چوارچێوەی کارنامە و بەرپرسیارێتیی خۆیدا، پلانێکی فرە ڕەهەندی دارشتووە بۆ ڕاکێشانی سەرنجی کۆمەڵگەی نێودەوڵەتی، بە تایبەت وڵاتی بەڕیتانیا، بەرامبەر بەو مەترسییانەی ڕووبەڕووی کاری ڕۆژنامەوانی دەبنەوە.

  تەوەرە سەرەکییەکانی پلانەکە

  ١. کۆبوونەوە لەگەڵ دامەزراوەی (Chatham House):

  نیاز و پلانی جدی هەیە بۆ ئەنجامدانی کۆبوونەوەیەک لەگەڵ بەرپرسانی بەڕیتانیا، بە تایبەت لەگەڵ دامەزراوەی بەناوبانگی چاتام هاوس (Chatham House) کە ناوەندێکی گەورە و کاریگەری لێکۆڵینەوە و چاودێریکردنی ڕووداوە نێودەوڵەتییەکانە.

  ئامانج لەم کۆبوونەوەیە گەیاندنی سەرجەم ڕاپۆرت و بەڵگەنامە فەرمییەکانە لەسەر دۆخی ئێستای ڕۆژنامەنووسان.

  ٢. پەیوەندی لەگەڵ پەرلەمانی بەڕیتانیا:

  هەنگاوی داهاتوو بریتی دەبێت لە ڕێکخستنی کۆبوونەوەی توندوتۆڵ لەگەڵ ئەندامان و بەرپرسانی پەرلەمانی بەڕیتانیا بە مەبەستی گفتوگۆکردن لەسەر دۆخە نەخوازراوەکە و داواکردنی چاودێرییەکی وردتر لەلایەن ئەوانەوە.

  ٣. بەگەڕخستنی کەناڵە دپلۆماسییەکان:

  بەهۆی بوونی کونسوڵخانە و باڵیۆزخانەکانی وڵاتان لە ناوچەکەدا، ڕێکخراوەکە جەخت لەسەر بەکارهێنانی ئەم کەناڵانە دەکاتەوە بۆ دروستکردنی گوشار و گەیاندنی پەیامەکان.

  ئامانجی کۆتایی و کۆنفرانسەکان

  ڕێکخراوی ڕۆشنبیریی کورد لە داهاتوودا کار بۆ سازدانی کۆنفرانس و کۆبوونەوەی گشتی دەکات بە ئامانجی:

  ڕاگرتنی دەستبەجێی پرۆسەی گرتن، تۆمەتبارکردن، کوشتن و شەهیدکردنی ڕۆژنامەنووسان.
