Details of the Arrest of Journalist Bryar Namiq in Sulaymaniyah

Today, October 11, 2026, journalist Bryar Namiq was arrested in the city of Sulaymaniyah and released four hours later.

In a statement provided to the Kurdish Intellectuals Organization in the UK, he highlighted several lawsuits and issues related to his work, as well as the allegations filed against him.

He explained that three lawsuits have been filed against him by the Minister of Housing and Reconstruction (concerning two to three companies). According to Namiq, they had presented evidence regarding several cases of corruption.

Bryar Namiq also noted that one of the lawsuits relates to an interview conducted with the tribal chief of the Mamyān tribe concerning the illegal sale of 15 dunams of land in the village of Dartoy ‘Haji Harith’ to several prominent figures and military officers.

Furthermore, he stated that another lawsuit pertains to the Warmawa – Darbandikhan road project, which addressed flaws and shortcomings in the road’s implementation, alongside a third lawsuit also related to exposing deficiencies backed by evidence.

Namiq emphasized that throughout his 17 years of journalistic work, he has published numerous documents on corruption and other legal matters. He expressed full readiness to defend himself in court, stating that there is no evidence against him that disproves the cases he presented.

Legal Context & Protections

According to Law No. 35 of 2007 (The Journalism Law in the Kurdistan Region), journalists are subject to specific and independent legal procedures when performing their professional duties:

• Article 7, Paragraph 4: Explicitly emphasizes that no journalist may be detained, arrested, or imprisoned for publishing material or expressing an opinion related to their journalistic work.

• Penalties and Accountability: Penalties related to journalistic violations under this law are strictly limited to financial fines, rather than detention, arrest, or imprisonment.

Organization Statement

The Kurdish Intellectuals Organization in the UK will not limit its actions to merely condemning and recording these violations. In the near future, the organization will submit these documents regarding the state of press freedom to international press freedom advocacy organizations. This step aims to help generate pressure and help guide press freedom in the Kurdistan Region.
