One Year Since the Attack on Zoom Media Network: Challenges, Financial Losses, and a New Cyberattack
Report prepared based on a statement by Hemin Mahmoud to the Kurdish Cultural Organisation in the UK.
One year after the attack on Zoom Media Network by local security forces in Sulaymaniyah, violations and obstacles against the outlet continue unabated. In the latest violation, a cyberattack targeted the network’s official social media pages, resulting in their compromise and takeover. In this regard, Hemin Mahmoud, owner of Zoom Media Network, revealed new details regarding the acts of violence, financial losses, and the reasons behind the suspension of the outlet’s operations.
Information on the Attacks and Financial Losses: On January 20, 2025, two offices of Zoom Media Network were raided, and their new studio equipment and hardware were confiscated.
Violations: The network has faced three main types of violations:

Deployment of armed forces to raid its offices.

Plundering of valuable technical equipment and assets.

Forced closure of the network.
Hemin Mahmoud stated: “Following a meeting with the Metro Center and the Vice Prime Minister in Sulaymaniyah, a decision was made to return the equipment and relocate the studio. However, to date, part of the equipment has not been returned. The latest estimates indicate that the network has suffered over $2 million in financial damage.”
Key Demands of Zoom Media Network: The owner of Zoom emphasized three primary demands to resolve the situation:

Vacating their main studio, which remains occupied to this day.

Returning all equipment currently held by security forces.

Providing full financial compensation for the substantial damages incurred by the channel.
Hemin Mahmoud disclosed that various proposals were made to pressure him into relinquishing the media outlet or transferring ownership to another team in partnership with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). However, he firmly rejected these pressures and proposals, stating:
“Zoom is an independent network and belongs to me; it is not for sale under any circumstances.”
He also noted that employees were granted full freedom to pursue employment elsewhere.
New Cyberattack on Social Media: In a recent escalation on the night of February 10, 2026, a widespread cyberattack was launched against Zoom’s social media presence. All of Zoom’s official pages across platforms—including its Kurdish, Arabic, Sports, and Badini accounts—were simultaneously hacked. All administrators and editors were removed, and control of the pages was seized.
Violations of the Law: Regarding the legal context, Hemin Mahmoud pointed out that Law No. 35 on Journalism (passed by the Kurdistan Parliament) has been completely disregarded.
It was further emphasized that the outlet maintains strong relations with foreign diplomatic missions and embassies in the Kurdistan Region, which continue to reaffirm their support for Zoom.
Position of the Kurdish Cultural Organisation in the UK: The organisation declared that it will treat the case of Zoom Media Network as a symbol of media violations in the Kurdistan Region and an indicator of the failure to implement press freedom laws. They affirmed that they will actively continue to highlight and address these violations.
The raid on Zoom Media occurred due to the power struggle within the Sulaymaniyah leadership between Bafel Talabani and Lahur Jangi. During the crackdown on Lahur Jangi, Zoom Media was also targeted because the outlet was financially backed by Lahur Jangi.

پێشێلکارییەکان: دەزگاکە تووشی سێ جۆر هێرشی سەرەکی بووەتەوە:
هێنانی هێزی چەکدار بۆ سەر نوسینگەکانی.
تاڵانکردنی ئامێر و کەلوپەلە بەنرخە تەکنیکییەکانی.
داخستنی دەزگاکە.
هێمن مەحموود دەڵێت: ”دوای کۆبوونەوە لەگەڵ سەنتەری میترۆ و جێگری سەرۆکی حکومەت لە سلێمانی، بڕیاردرابوو ئامێرەکان بگەڕێنرێنەوە و ستۆدیۆکە بگوێزرێتەوە. بەڵام تا ئێستا بەشێک لە ئامێرەکان نەگەڕێنراونەتەوە و دوا خەمڵاندنەکان ئاماژە بەوە دەکەن کە زیاتر لە ٢ ملیۆن دۆلار زیانی مادی بە کەناڵەکە گەیشتووە”.

خاوەنی زووم جەختی لە سێ داواکاری سەرەکی کردەوە بۆ چارەسەرکردنی ڕەوشەکە:
چۆڵکردنی ستۆدیۆ سەرەکییەکەیان کە تا ئێستا بە داگیرکراوی ماوەتەوە.
گەڕاندنەوەی سەرجەم ئەو ئامێرانەی کە تا ئێستا لای هێزەکان ماونەتەوە.
قەرەبووکردنەوەی تەواوەتی ئەو زیانە مادییە زۆرەی بەر کەناڵەکە کەوتووە.
هێمن مەحموود، ئاشکرای کرد کە پێشنیاری جۆراوجۆری پێکراوە بۆ ئەوەی دەستبەرداری دەزگاکە بێت یان بە پارە ڕادەستی تیمی دیکەی بکات بە هاوبەشی لەگەڵ یەکێتیی نیشتمانیی کوردستان. بەڵام بە توندی ئەم فشار و پێشنیارانەی ڕەتکردۆتەوە و ڕایگەیاندووە:
“زووم دەزگایەکی سەربەخۆیە و هی منە، بە هیچ شێوەیەک بۆ فرۆشتن نییە.”
هەروەها ئاماژەی بەوە کرد کە ئازادی تەواویان داوە بە کارمەندانیان بۆ ئەوەی لە شوێنی دیکە درێژە بە ئیشەکانیان بدەن.
-هێرشی نوێی ئەلکترۆنی بۆ سەر سۆشیال میدیا:
لە پەرەسەندنێکی نوێدا، شەوی ڕابردوو،٢/١٠/٢٠٢٦، هێرشێکی ئەلکترۆنی بەرفراوان ئەنجامدراوە کە تێیدا سەرجەم پەیجەکانی زووم لە تۆڕە کۆمەڵایەتییەکان (کوردی، عەرەبی، سپۆرت و بادینی) بە یەک جار هاککراون و سەرجەم ئادمیین و ئیدیتۆرەکانیان لابرابوون و دەستیان بەسەردا گیراوە.
پێشێلکردنی یاسا: لەبارەی ڕەوشی یاساییەوە، هێمن مەحموود ئاماژەی بەوە کرد کە هیچ ڕێزێک لە یاسای ژمارە ٣٥ی ڕۆژنامەگەری (پەسەندکراوی پەرلەمانی کوردستان) نەگیراوە.
جەختکرایەوە لەوەی دەزگاکە پەیوەندییەکی بەهێزی لەگەڵ نوێنەرایەتی و باڵیۆزخانەی وڵاتان لە هەرێمی کوردستان هەیە و بەردەوام پشتیوانی خۆیان بۆ زووم دووپات دەکەنەوە.
هەڵوێستی ڕێکخراوی ڕۆشنبیرانی کورد لە بەریتانیا: ڕێکخراوەکە ڕایگەیاندووە کە کەیسی دەزگای زووم دەکاتە ڕەمزی پێشێلکاری بەرامبەر بە میدیا لە هەرێمی کوردستان و نیشانەی جێبەجێ نەکردنی یاسای کاری ڕۆژنامەنووسی، هەروەها بەردەوام دەبن لە کاری جدی لەسەر ئەم پێشێلکارییانە.
هێرش کردنە سەر زووم بەهۆی ململانێکی نێوان دەسەڵاتی سلێمانی لەنێوان بافڵ تاڵەبانی و لاهوو جەنگی روویدا و لەکاتی هێرش کردنە سەر لاهوور جەنگی هێرشیش کرایە سەر میدیای زووم چونکە ئەو میدیایە لەلایەن لاهوور جەنگیەوە پشتیوانی دارایی دەکرا.
