Ibrahim Pasha of Baban founded Sulaimani on November 14, 1784. Every year the people of the city celebrate this anniversary.
A brilliant history
For 241 years, Sulaymaniyah has been known not only as an important city in Kurdistan, but also as a cultural and artistic center. The city is known for its poets, writers, artists and thinkers who have played an important role in the development of Kurdish culture.
The founder of the city, Ibrahim Pasha of Baban, had a special development plan for the city. He wanted to create a place where life, business and culture could flourish, and of course he succeeded in his goal.
Capital of Culture
Sulaymaniyah has been called the “Cultural Capital of Kurdistan”, and this name is not without reason. This city:
• House of poets and writers: From Nali the Great to dozens of other poets and writers, Sulaimani has been the place of sitting and creating important literary works.
• Source of Kurdish newspaper: The first Kurdish newspaper “Kurdistan” was published in Cairo in 1913 by Miqdad Madhat Bedirkhan, but Sulaymaniyah became the center of development of Kurdish press and journalism.
• It is the leader of education: A large number of important schools, colleges and universities have been established in Sulaimani, where a large number of Kurdish generations have been educated.
• It is an artistic and musical center: Theater, music and visual arts have always had a special place in Sulaimani.
360 degrees of culture
Today, Sulaymaniyah continues to play a cultural role. Cultural activities, literary events, theatre, music concerts and art exhibitions are all part of the city’s daily life. Nawa-i-Nuw continues to preserve and develop its cultural heritage with passion.
Celebrating the anniversary
On November 14, children and young people will learn about the history of their city from experienced people, sing patriotic poems and hold various activities to honor this glorious history.
The city’s residents gather in parks and public places to commemorate the founders and pledge to continue to preserve Sulaymaniyah’s reputation as the capital of culture.
A message for the future
Commemorating the founding of Sulaymaniyah is not only a return to history, but also a message for the future. The message is that Sulaymaniyah, with all its obstacles, will continue to be a cultural and educational light for Kurdistan and the entire region.
