25 Kurdish Migrants Freed in Libya, Set to Return to Kurdistan

LIBYA, Sunday, August 24, 2025

– Twenty-five 25 migrants from the Kurdistan Region, who had been previously detained in Libya, have been released today and are set to be repatriated to the Kurdistan Region with the assistance of the Iraqi Embassy in Libya.

The migrants were attempting to reach the shores of Italy via North Africa and Libya, hoping to proceed further into European countries through illicit means. However, they were apprehended by Libyan security forces several days ago.

Following their release by Libyan authorities, preparations are currently underway for their return to the Kurdistan Region. This repatriation process is being facilitated through coordination and cooperation with the Iraqi Embassy in Libya.

Illegal migration attempts via Libya are widely considered one of the most perilous routes to Europe. Annually, a significant number of migrants undertaking this journey face detention or tragic incidents.
