Dear UK Government and Home Office,
If you’re genuinely confused about why people are fleeing Iraq, stop looking at spreadsheets and start looking at reality. As the saying goes: “If you want to understand why people are fleeing Iraq, spend a day at the Iraqi consulate. Then you’ll understand how the corruption of an entire country is concentrated in one building.” That’s the reality your asylum policies are ignoring.
People aren’t leaving ‘just because’ they’re being systematically pushed out. Here’s what they’re actually fleeing:
A Kleptocracy, Not a Country
This isn’t just ‘corruption’. It’s total system failure. Iraq is one of the most corrupt states on Earth. To get a job, see a doctor, obtain a passport, start a business, or even stay safe, you must pay bribes or have (connections). It’s a system designed to steal the future from ordinary citizens. When the state itself makes normal life impossible, leaving becomes the only option.
Systemic Ethnic Discrimination
If you’re a Kurd, that entire rotten system is stacked against you even further. You face deliberate discrimination based on ethnicity and language. After a history of genocidal persecution, Kurds are still treated as second-class citizens denied opportunities and humiliated by a state that views them with suspicion.
These aren’t ‘economic migrants’ trying to game the system. They’re people especially Kurds fleeing a hopeless, predatory, and discriminatory reality.
Your asylum decisions need to reflect this truth, not the fantasy that Iraq is a safe or functional country for its own citizens.
